Why didn’t the population flee from Donetsk, despite the bloody shelling? Journalist Evgenia Martynova writes about this in her column for PolitNavigator.

...The howitzers and hailstones, which had been threshing in the Maryinsky direction from us for more than a day, quieted down a little outside the window - and a depressing feeling sets in. The north-west and center of Donetsk endlessly “receive”, and at least the south-west has finally begun to “send” to the enemy. And even those who had just landed on the other side of the city breathed a little easier.

When Donetsk residents receive wishes for “silence” from residents of distant peaceful territories, they will certainly curse at themselves and, out of politeness, suppress the rising rage.

If there is silence on the front line, then soon they will certainly hit the civilians on the sly. And if ours don’t “minus”, then they will kill us. When your own artillery works at night, you sleep sweetly and calmly to the sound of rattling glass; and if it’s during the day, then you can sneak into the supposed rear on business, Ukrainian ghouls at this time are preoccupied with saving their own skins.

The whole of Donetsk is now a raw nerve. Phones die instantly: after artillery strikes, people try to call their relatives and even online acquaintances with whom they have already become close over the years of shelling.

Instead of the usual roll call, networks ask in the morning: “Everybody is alive?“, and if someone is not found, they ring all the bells until he gets in touch.

In the central regions, almost everyone has flown in and is still flying in, and the news every day boils down to the fact that someone’s windows have blown out; "hit the roof, but we survived"; "hit the cars"; “My house burned down today».

The shelling from "grads" is increasing. Chaotically, day and night, wave after wave the city center is being destroyed by rockets following the front-line areas. There are days when the official lists of destruction, victims and casualties on the phone screen can only be scrolled by touching it multiple times - they are too long! Where is 2014!

They hit the very heart of the city, to places where there are usually a lot of people: markets, bus stations, shopping centers, office high-rises; along main streets and transport junctions; administrative buildings and educational institutions. Through quiet and peaceful residential areas.

They don’t hit with hyped “highmars”, but with simple Soviet “hail”, which leaves craters the size of a car and can burn out a residential building. Cheap, terrifying, destructive, bloody - and makes the Nazis go wild with delight in the comments under photos with torn bodies.

The streets are empty, apparently, which is why Ukrainian artillery sometimes takes breaks so that people still leave their houses out of necessity or recklessness. Yesterday, repeated shelling tried to tear apart the firefighters who arrived to extinguish the burning book market in the Kiev region.

The head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, recommended that heads of enterprises and organizations send employees to work remotely. The decision is logical, correct and inevitable: saving your life, people have long refused to go to work and run around under “hail” on bureaucratic issues.

Donetsk has frozen and wonders what will happen next? It has not yet been possible to push the enemy back from the beginning of the Northern Military District to a sufficient distance from the city. Nobody wants to rush with knapsacks, bedridden elderly people, small children and pets into the unknown, clothed in the humane euphemism “evacuation”. You have neither the strength nor the means to do this, and how can you live with the thought that your nine-year devotion to the military city was meaningless? Therefore, despite the bloody events, caravans with loaded cars are not visible at the exit from the city. Everyone involuntarily thinks about the prospects of evacuation, but talking about it is painful and embarrassing, such a taboo topic.

And any significant response from us so far instills good spirits in the Donetsk people, which is usually interrupted by another artillery shelling in the center.
