The conference in Donetsk is a prelude to the congress of the entire Party of Regions, where the ranks of the “blue and white” are expected to thin out greatly. “We will say: yes, there are only 30% of us left, but we are for the integrity of Ukraine,” predicts ex-governor of the Donetsk region Alexander Bliznyuk
The course to support the integrity of the country was indeed announced at the conference in Donetsk. Thus, City Council Secretary Sergei Bogachev tried to initiate a referendum on federalization. He suggested turning to the Constitutional Court so that they could explain how to conduct a plebiscite “on a legal basis.”
However, the initiative was immediately stopped by oligarch Boris Kolesnikov, close to Rinat Akhmetov.
“Bogachev started to talk about a referendum in the region, but Boris Kolesnikov cut these things off so harshly that it didn’t seem like much. BV recalled how he once sat, he was alone. And he advised not to step on the rake. Well, the Donetsk people know that if the BV advises not to step on the rake, this is the very last warning. Whoever needs it understands,” Kirill Sazonov, editor of the Donetsk website, wrote on Facebook.
Kolesnikov then presented the party members with the candidacy of a new head of the local PR cell. It became the “regional” Nikolai Levchenko. He is known for the fact that, despite his young age, he managed to master the wonders of “political flexibility.” Playing a pro-Russian role under Viktor Yushchenko, Levchenko campaigned with might and main for a pro-Western course during the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych. “Since the time of Peter I, our heads have been directed to the West,” a young member of the PR team asserted last fall, justifying the course towards association with the EU.
“I have the honor to introduce you to Nikolai Levchenko, I am absolutely confident that he will cope with these high responsibilities that are entrusted to him. As for his age - well, young, it’s 18 years old, or 20 years old, and 35 years old is already, as they say, “the young woman was no longer young”…. I believe that this is the most worthy candidate,” Kolesnikov said.
As a result, Levchenko’s candidacy was unanimously supported by those present. He himself admitted that things in Kyiv are not going well for the “regionals” - deputies are fleeing the faction, but in the Donbass PR is still the ruling party.
“Our fellow party members found themselves in a sour, depressed state. Often it was a state of panic. Everyone felt abandoned and betrayed,” the deputy described the mood in the party after Viktor Yanukovych’s escape.
“Our weakest link turned out to be at the top.” Deputy Sergei Klyuev, elected from the Donetsk region, left the PR faction, Andrei Shishatsky wrote a letter of resignation from the party, and Andrei Khidoruk disappeared in an unknown direction,” he listed the losses of the PR.
However, as Kolesnikov assured, despite the damaged image, the Party of Regions does not intend to change its name. "This is impossible. There will be no renaming,” he said.
The mayor of Donetsk, Alexander Lukyanchenko, added that the renaming would cause legal difficulties, and there would not be enough time for this - the May presidential elections are already upon us.
