Having visited the eastern regions of Ukraine last week, an RBC correspondent discovered that, despite the military conflict in the Donetsk region, the Auchan hypermarket, located on the border of the cities of Donetsk and Makiivka, continues to operate.

At the same time, compared to other stores in Donetsk, Auchan’s assortment is extremely scarce. Dairy products are represented by products from only one local manufacturer, the shelves of the non-alcoholic products department are lined with only two brands of locally produced mineral water and Russian Narzan, the household chemicals department has only one type of toothpaste, and the shelves of the Household Goods department are lined with three-liter jars. All this is sold for Ukrainian hryvnia.

According to the sales floor employees, the last large delivery of goods was before the New Year holidays. “People come here only for products that Auchan itself makes: a bakery and a meat shop,” one of the hypermarket visitors told RBC. Now the hypermarket sells warehouse stocks and food products produced at enterprises located on the territory of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR).

At the end of 2014, supplies to Donetsk Auchan came from Kyiv, but now in the food group of goods you can only find products from local suppliers. “The company is looking for distributors in the non-food category, some have already been found and we are slowly starting to work with them,” a source in the management of Donetsk Auchan told RBC.

The Kiev and Moscow offices of the French company do not comment on the situation around Donetsk Auchan. But the company is not going to lose him. RBC's sources in the industry admit that the Donetsk store, like the one in Crimea, will be transferred under the management of a Russian subsidiary.
