The chairman of the mission, Fiona Fraser, announced this today in Kyiv during the presentation of the report of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.

She noted that the report covers the period from November 16, 2016 to February 15, 2017, which was marked by a sharp escalation of the conflict in Donbass.

“Every escalation, every battle deprived people of basic human rights - the right to life, physical integrity, freedom of movement, access to medical care and education. The suffering of people is real and painful and reminds us that this conflict has a human face,” the UN spokeswoman said.

“The face of this conflict is the face of an elderly man who hid every night in the basement of the Petrovsky district of Donetsk,” Fraser added. “There he sought protection from shots that sounded very close, there he slept, ate, went to the toilet in damp, cold and generally humiliating conditions. This conflict also has the face of a woman whose life was divided in half by the line of contact. She works at the Donetsk filtration station in Avdeevka, but lives in Krutaya Balka near Yasinovataya, which is under the control of armed groups.”

Also, the chairwoman of the UN Monitoring Group clarified that the report’s conclusions are based on the testimony of 205 people who “became victims or witnesses of human rights violations throughout the country.”

As PolitNavigator reported, as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian Armed Forces artillery of the Petrovsky district of Donetsk, hospital morgue and funeral home damaged.
