Unfortunately, until recently his condition was simply catastrophic. It is absolutely incomprehensible how it was possible to bring strategic municipal property to such a deplorable state.

Yes, of course, no one expects any special comfort from such premises; it is temporary and intended to save lives. But at least keeping the room clean and disinfecting are simply mandatory things. When a vital need arose for them, it turned out that all the bomb shelters in the city were disconnected from all services - electricity, sewerage, air conditioning, and the premises themselves were littered with garbage the size of a man.

The security point opened today was, of course, built in Soviet times and has long since become unsuitable for receiving people. But it was disinfected, ventilation ducts were cleaned and adjusted, mattresses, blankets, water and food supplies were brought in. At the same time, this bomb shelter can accommodate up to 500 people.

Alena Yakovenko, a representative of the Russian Community of Donbass, said: “Probably, with great pleasure we would open a new house in this area today, but, unfortunately, we have such a situation today that we are forced to open a bomb shelter. We removed several trucks of garbage from here, installed electricity, installed an electric generator, brought everything we needed, and if necessary, the shelter is ready to receive people. The population has been notified. The situation in the city is getting worse, so we will not stop at just this one room, we are going to open several more shelters.”

“Now we have a lot of work to do to restore shelters for people and make them convenient for use. The Russian community of Donbass is helping us with this, for which I would like to say a big thank you to them. I think that with joint efforts we will do this work in order to protect as many lives as possible of the residents of Donetsk,” said member of the Novorossiya parliament Alexander Kolesnik.

Residents of the neighborhood came to the opening of the bomb shelter. Alexandra, a nurse by profession, says that she will not go down into the bomb shelter herself; she will save people during bombings.

Her neighbor, 82-year-old Maria Timofeevna, also remembers the war very well. “In that war, everything was clear: a German or a Romanian was coming, his uniform was fascist, he didn’t speak our language - that meant he was an enemy. And here - he seems to speak Russian or Ukrainian, but he came to shoot and bomb us... It’s good that there are still people who care about us. We won then and we will win now,” she said.
