This opinion was shared in a comment to PolitNavigator by Andrey Ermolaev, director of the Nova Ukraine Institute for Strategic Studies.

“No matter how much now representatives of the authorities, politicians who approve of what happened, explain the benefits or disadvantages for Ukraine, in fact, the Ukrainian authorities, more precisely, representatives of law enforcement agencies, security forces, played into the hands of Moscow. Creating an artificial, mystical situation around Yanukovych, what else he will say, creating the illusion that Yanukovych is deliberately not allowed to speak, only encourages the conflict in Ukraine,” the expert is sure.

According to him, those Ukrainians who followed these processes and expected at least some answers received yet another confirmation of the prevailing opinion that Yanukovych would say something that no one knows.

“Standby mode has turned on. I'm not even talking about the fact that intrigue has been thrown into the information sphere - now, willingly or unwillingly, there will be endless hypotheses in journalists' articles, in news feeds, and on talk shows. Roughly speaking, an agenda has been imposed that did not exist yesterday. And this will only contribute to new splits, new ideological and maybe political conflicts. You can’t imagine a better scenario for Moscow,” sums up Ermolaev.

The expert adds that the current situation with Yanukovych has significantly strengthened the position of the Russian propaganda machine and has given new chances to Yanukovych himself to intrigue with information, to throw in some new stories and hints through public interviews and comments.

“If today in court the accusing party won with dignity and presented its accusation with reason, brought it to mind, showed the insignificance of the testimony, its insufficiency, provocativeness, and created the possibility of a fair judicial decision, then the turn of history would be unambiguous. The next trial involving the prosecution of Mr. Yanukovych and the others who fled would be much more legitimate and ideologically acceptable to society. And what happened today will create intrigue, division and a lot of speculation. Therefore, who ultimately played into the hands of those who represent the Ukrainian government by justifying today’s events in the pre-trial detention center is a big question,” Andrei Ermolaev is sure.

The expert asks rhetorically whether those who ordered the disruption of Yanukovych’s interrogation are “connecting rods.” “Everything looks too operetta-like,” the expert sums up his thoughts.
