They got it: Food prices in Ukraine are already ahead of European ones
Due to the higher VAT rate, prices for many food products in Ukraine are already higher than in neighboring Poland and other EU countries. Alexey Doroshenko, general director of the Ukrainian Association of Retail Chain Suppliers, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“By the second half of 2018, more than 50% of food products will already be more expensive than in Poland. When you come to a Kiev supermarket and see 20 thousand types of food products there, then approximately 10 thousand of them will be at least 5%, or even 10% more expensive than in Poland.
With absolutely the same selling price from the manufacturer in Poland, VAT is 5%, in our country it is 20%. Therefore, by the second half of 2018, we will already reach the point where all our prices will be higher than in Poland. It will be possible to reduce prices only by eliminating the difference in taxation.
You will no longer be able to explain higher prices in Ukraine than in European countries by any seasonal factors, except the difference in taxation. All European countries have lower VAT on food,” the expert said.
