Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It is obvious that early elections should have taken place back in 2016. Elections increase the legitimacy of the government and give it a break. But we must understand that the president’s thinking is not political, but economic. This is an entrepreneur, and of the galaxy that thinks not in terms of shares and investments, but in the categories of the mid-90s, for whom it is important to personally control everything, especially with regard to financial and power tools. That is why the president is not going to these elections, because the ratings show that even if it is possible to push through the majoritarian election system, which today looks most attractive to Bankova, then in any case the president’s forces will not be able to create a coalition,” the expert said.
According to him, a coalition will be created around other forces, and the president will again be doomed, first to conflict with parliament and the new government, and later to early presidential elections, because he will lose the conflict.
“Early parliamentary elections will end this rhetorical-propaganda-speculative-informational political cycle and the president’s appeals to patriotism, reforms, etc. will no longer work. He will be completely beaten, he will have no tools left to fight for his political future. In addition, he will become the “front man”, the “extreme”, on whom all the dogs will be unleashed. Most likely, this will result in not only early elections for him, but also criminal prosecution. Whether he will have time to escape or not is a secondary question,” sums up Bortnik.
