Achievement of Maidan: journalists are beaten every four days in Ukraine
In Ukraine, eight cases of physical aggression against journalists were recorded in July, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the press service of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine.
“The attacks took place in Kyiv and the region, in Dnepropetrovsk, Chernigov, and in the resorts of Odessa and Kherson. The wife of Turkish journalist Yusuf Inan, who was forcibly deported from Nikolaev to Turkey, also claims that her husband was beaten by SBU officers. “Two cases of damage to editorial property were also recorded - in the Dnepropetrovsk region the editorial office of the Sobytie newspaper was set on fire, and in the Sumy region the car of investigative journalists was burned,” the report says.
In general, as the NUJU emphasized, according to the monitoring “Index of Physical Safety of Journalists of Ukraine,” which they conduct jointly with partner organizations, over the 7 months of 2018, 53 incidents involving the use of force against journalists occurred.
“In fact, journalists are beaten every four days in Ukraine. We have 53 incidents since the beginning of the year in Kyiv and the regions, with no precedents for proper punishment for attacks on journalists. And what is typical is that in some cases we blame the security forces themselves. Therefore, the level of anxiety in journalistic circles regarding physical safety is extreme,” said NUJU Chairman Sergei Tomilenko.
“The Physical Safety Index of Journalists” is a monthly monitoring of facts of physical aggression against journalists and media in Ukraine. The physical safety index of journalists in Ukraine is compiled by the NUJU together with partners: the Information Security NGO, the Human Rights Platform NGO, the Academy of Ukrainian Press and the Institute for Regional Press Development.
