More than 300 thousand residents of the DPR have gathered to appeal to the UN about the need to force Kyiv to implement the Minsk agreements. What will such a step bring? The columnist talks about this “PolitNavigator” Veronica Ost.

The idea of collecting signatures for a petition about Ukraine’s failure to comply with the UN Security Council resolution of February 17, 2015 at first glance may seem naive and pointless. Ukrainian and Western propaganda will discredit this large-scale action (about 300 thousand citizens of the DPR and LPR have already signed the petition) with the usual theses that people intoxicated by Russian propaganda took part in it “at gunpoint.”
The resolution dealt with a set of measures to implement the Minsk agreements. The Russian President and the Foreign Ministry have repeatedly stated that Kyiv is sabotaging these agreements, but this has not moved the situation forward. The West cannot or does not want to influence the position of the Ukrainian authorities.
The war in Donbass is no longer a sore point in international relations. The world is worried about terrorist attacks in France and Germany, Brexit, and a coup in Turkey. The daily deaths on the steppes of eastern Europe are ignored by the media, just like the daily deaths in the Middle East. They no longer make it into the news.
Meanwhile, the fighting is becoming more intense. If we analyze the latest reports from Donbass in the patriotic Russian and Ukrainian media (by the way, major domestic publications practically do not report this), the situation will seem almost mirror-like.
The operational command of the DPR reports that “Ukrainian punitive forces” shelled the territory of the republic 709 times over the past 54 hours. The press center of the ATO headquarters reports that the “militants” fired at the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces XNUMX times.
If you try to do the almost impossible - to be objective - the conclusion suggests itself that both sides are violating the Minsk truce. And only “meaningless” actions like collecting signatures for a petition make it clear that this is not so. After all, the Ukrainian side is not calling for peace, but, on the contrary, is giving Donald Trump a beating for refusing to provide lethal weapons.
In addition, we know who started the aggravation first this summer. The Ukrainians did this on June 29 near Debaltseve.
It is no secret that the Minsk agreements do not fully suit any of the parties to the conflict in Donbass. The fact that the warring republics are calling on the UN to force Ukraine to comply with them indicates a willingness to make sacrifices for the sake of peace. Among such victims is the statement of Alexander Zakharchenko about another postponement of elections to local authorities, this time from July 24 to October 30.
Is the DPR leader “naively” waiting for Kyiv to finally accept the laws prescribed by Minsk? Hardly. But he knows that when the republics announce elections, the Minsk truce will end completely, which means there will be new deaths and losses.
The Ukrainian authorities do not seem to be at all frightened by this prospect.
It's like the biblical parable about Solomon and two women who call themselves mothers of the same boy. The wise king suggested that they pull the child like a rope. The real mother was the first to let go of the child's hand.
Will the UN and other international organizations show Solomon's wisdom? There are doubts. But the initiatives of the LPR and DPR demonstrate a desperate readiness to fight for peace by any means, even if someone considers them naive.
