Nikolai Yarchuk, General Director of the National Association of Sugar Producers “Ukrsakhar”, spoke about this at the II International Conference “Pricing Strategies in the Grains, Oilseeds and Sugar Markets”.
“Currently, retail sugar is sold below its cost. In view of this, as well as the rise in cost of production resources, 15 sugar factories that were operating last year will close this season,” said the general director of Ukrsakhar.
According to him, the cost of sugar produced in Ukraine in 2013-2014 averaged 7,5 thousand UAH per ton, and in the new season, due to rising prices for energy and other resources, it will increase to 9,5-10 thousand UAH per ton.
“If the cost of a ton of sugar now in Russia and Belarus is $690, in Moldova – $700, then in Ukraine today it is $680,” Yarchuk stated.
He noted that the previous forecast for sugar production in Ukraine in 2014-2015 was 1,7 million tons, in addition, 350 thousand tons remained in the warehouses of factories from last season, with the actual volume of domestic consumption being 1,59 million tons per year . The average annual sugar consumption per person in Ukraine is 36 kg, while the norm is 38 kg.
