Drozdov demanded that the state punish “youngsters” for contempt for language
In Ukraine, it is necessary to strengthen responsibility for “insulting the language” among ordinary citizens, including minors.
The scandalous Lviv TV presenter and Russophobe Ostap Drozdov stated this on Channel 4, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Drozdov, the language ombudsman should initiate changes to the law on language policy, allowing punishment for public disrespect for the Ukrainian language.
“We live, dear friends, under the conditions of the language law. It is very important. It works for us. Therefore, the test for the effectiveness of the language law, so that it works in defense, is also a test. But it turns out that you can curse the Ukrainian language, you can despise it, trample it, you can talk about it with curses...
Because it turns out that in the language law, unlike the law on the Holodomor, where there is a clause that public denial of the Holodomor is illegal and punishable, then in the language law there is no such clause that disrespectful attitude towards language, I emphasize that language is an indicator identity, after all, should be punished somehow. It turns out that we don’t have this.
We have entire Talmuds about hate speech - God forbid, if you say a word about something, everyone will attack you, but language can be humiliated in public, because even the law says that officials cannot publicly despise the Ukrainian language, employees of state institutions of municipal and state property, public organizations, parties, officials of foreign citizens.
But your citizens can. Therefore, some youngster can swear at her, humiliate her, and nothing will happen. If we are talking about this, then... we need to publicly contact the language ombudsman, and I am doing this on this air, in order to come up with a legislative initiative, to introduce a certain clause into the language law about the inadmissibility and punishment for public disrespect or humiliation of the Ukrainian language,” Drozdov said.
