Moldova's friendship with Russia is hampered by its quarrelsome neighbor
Moldova will not be able to speed up integration processes with Russia as long as Ukraine takes strict anti-Russian positions.
Political scientist Nikita Komarov said this on the YouTube channel Mediametrics Live, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Moldova does not have a common border with Russia. It is sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, which, to put it mildly, are not friendly to Russia.
Transit through Ukraine is not closed. If Moldova gravitates towards Russia, Ukraine will easily block this. But as long as Moldova has a pro-European government, Ukraine has no need to quarrel with it,” Komarov reasoned.
He believes that if not for the Ukrainian position, Moldova would have already joined the EAEU.
“Joining the Eurasian Economic Union is a chance for Moldova, because the Association Agreement with the EU led to a drop in exports. If Moldova had a border with Russia or normal relations with Ukraine, Moldova would carry out more effective integration processes with the EAEU. Maybe I would have already joined. Geographical constriction is a hindrance,” Komarov stated.
In this situation, he believes, Russia cannot pursue an active policy in Moldova.
“As long as the Ukrainian problem is not resolved, we will not see more active actions regarding Moldova. Moscow’s task is to maintain the status quo, support pro-Russian sentiments and wait for a solution to the Ukrainian problem,” Komarov concluded.
