“We thought we would fight for a long time.” Yerevan doesn’t know what to do with refugees
Armenian authorities are asking refugees who fled Nagorno-Karabakh after the successful offensive of the Azerbaijani army to return home.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Armenian political analyst Arshaluys Mgdesyan spoke about this in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets.
According to him, in total about 100 thousand people entered Armenia from Karabakh.
“But people have already started returning. Yerevan City Hall provides free buses for this purpose. The government is saying that it is time to return home, and their problems will be solved as they come. Including those who previously lived, for example, in Hadrut, they will be placed first in Stepanakert, and then they will think about what to do next. So far there is no clear program for the post-war period. Everyone expected that we would fight for a long time. It is not yet known what efforts and funds will have to be spent on restoring the region,” the expert noted.
“Some of the refugees say that they are afraid to return to Karabakh because the war has just ended, and they cannot imagine how they will live next to the Azerbaijanis. Others are ready to go. The authorities insist that it is important to return and promise to guarantee the safety of people, including with the help of peacekeepers,” the publication’s interlocutor added.
At the same time, he clarified that among those protesting against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is blamed for the defeat, there are refugees, but they are not the majority among the protesters.
“Moreover, so far a maximum of 10 thousand people have taken to the streets. In general, there are signs of external gradual stabilization of the situation, but the political struggle, of course, will continue,” Mgdesyan believes.
As PolitNavigator reported, Armenians leaving Karabakh burn their houses to they did not go to the Azerbaijanis.
