The founder of the social network, Pavel Durov, spoke about this on his Vkontakte page.
“On December 13, 2013, the FSB demanded that we hand over the personal information of the organizers of the Euromaidan groups. Our response was and remains a categorical refusal - Russian jurisdiction does not extend to Ukrainian VKontakte users. Providing personal data of Ukrainians to the Russian authorities would not only be a violation of the law, but also a betrayal of all those millions of Ukrainians who trusted us,” he wrote.
According to him, due to the refusal he had to sell his share in the social network:
“I had to sacrifice a lot in the process. In particular, I sold my share of VKontakte, since its presence could prevent me from making the right decisions. But I don’t regret anything - protecting people’s personal data is worth that and much more. Since December 2013, I have no property, but I still have something more important - a clear conscience and ideals that I am ready to defend,” Durov said.
