This statement was made in an interview with the Ukrainian Week magazine by Andrey Stempitsky, commander of the Ukrainian Volunteer Sector of the Right Sector.
“Of course, there are criminals among the DUK and, possibly, PS fighters,” says Stempitsky. - Some small percentage. But, firstly, when people come to the DUK to fight and they have a criminal record, they are checked. They ask what kind of convictions they have. If, for example, there are rapes or some kind of pathological theft, then such a person has no place among us, because no matter how much you feed the wolf, he still looks into the forest. If there are murders for the purpose of profit or any sadistic inclinations, then they will also have no place in the DUK. But if these are some minor crimes, then why doesn’t a person have the right to fight for his homeland?.. Therefore, I think the question is not in the criminal record, but in the person himself. Many guys who had a criminal record showed themselves to be quite worthy warriors on the front line and would give a head start to many without a criminal record. By the way, I also have two criminal records.”
At the same time, the Ukrainian nationalist emphasized that his articles “went like criminal ones.”
In 1996 – 2001 Stempitsky was in prison for participating in an action to take control of a military airfield by force and neutralize security, and in 2011 was found guilty by the court of illegal possession of weapons.
As PolitNavigator already reported, Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Lyashko previously noted that half of the fighters in the Azov battalion have a criminal record.
In addition, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that Even repeat criminals will be drafted into the army.
