Two weeks until frost: There is nothing to heat Kyiv with
Kyiv, October 3 (Navigator, Vladimir Mikhailov) – The shortage of gas and coal, the massive switching on of electric heating and old power lines – all this threatens the heating season in Kyiv, says Alexander Parashchiy, director of the analytical department of Concorde Capital Investment Company.

“Our heating season starts in two weeks, even three. Obviously, there is a big threat, we have problems with coal, and with gas we also don’t fully understand how much we can get. Therefore, there may actually be problems with heat in Kyiv. Obviously, reducing the heat supply will lead to an increase in electricity consumption. Everyone will be keeping warm using oil heaters and other similar equipment, and electricity may also be in short supply. Thus, Trypilska Thermal Power Plant near Kiev runs on anthracite, which is in short supply in the current situation.
Moreover, our electrical networks, which were designed in the 70s, are designed for households with low electricity consumption, which only have a refrigerator and a television. Now we have a lot more electrical appliances, and if we still turn on our air conditioners and heaters, there may not just be rolling power outages, but also automatic shutdowns due to voltage surges in the power grid,” says Alexander Parashchiy.
Converting Kyiv thermal power plants and boiler houses to fuel oil will not solve the problems.
“You also need to understand that fuel oil will not save the situation. The cost of burning fuel oil is much higher than the cost of burning gas. In addition, gas is safe for the environment, which cannot be said about fuel oil. Fuel oil is not an alternative to gas, especially in cities,” the expert believes.
