“The General Assembly calls upon all international organizations and specialized agencies of the United Nations to use the phrase “Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine, temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation” when referring to Crimea in their official documents, communications and publications, including those in which refers to the statistical data of the Russian Federation,” says the voted document.

It also speaks of the need to recognize terrorist Oleg Sentsov, convicted in Crimea, as a political prisoner, condemns the issuance of Russian passports to residents of Crimea, and also demands that the peninsula be returned to Ukraine.

“The pressure on the aggressor continues,” Vladimir Yelchenko, Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN, pathetically stated on Twitter.

At the same time, resolutions of the UN General Assembly, unlike resolutions of the Security Council, do not have binding force, since they are only advisory in nature.

Note that adopted a few days earlier The anti-Russian resolution initiated by Ukraine, condemning the “militarization of Crimea and parts of the Black and Azov Seas,” was supported by 66 UN member states, and 19 voted against.

In total, we recall that the UN includes 193 states. Thus, only a third of UN members recognized Crimea as “occupied.” It is noteworthy that every year the number of countries that support the relevant resolution decreases.

For example, in 2016, 73 UN member states voted for the document, but even this figure then outraged Aider Muzhdabaev, a journalist working for the Majlis channel ATR.

“Ukraine was supported by 73 countries, while four dozen of them were themselves co-authors and initiators of the resolution. 23 countries voted against, mostly direct satellites of the Russian Federation, totalitarian regimes, etc. And another 76 countries abstained from voting on Crimea. Total: either only for or not against the annexation of Crimea by Russia and gross violations of human rights - the majority of countries voting this night in the UN General Assembly. There are almost a hundred such countries - 99, Mujabiev laments. “I don’t think it’s a huge victory for Ukraine that the majority of humanity living in the modern information world don’t give a damn about the Russian aggression against our country, about the murders, kidnappings, and repressions against the Crimean Tatars,” Mujabaev wrote then.

He also called on Ukrainian officials to “explain to the citizens of Ukraine why most of the world does not see Ukraine as a friend.”
