Borrell's double standards: the head of European diplomacy was caught in a lie
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that Brussels cannot force Kosovo’s “Prime Minister” Albin Kurti to implement what Pristina previously signed. We are talking about the creation of the Union of Serbian Municipalities.
The European politician announced this in response to a corresponding request from one of the members of the European Parliament.
“The creation of the Union of Serb-majority Municipalities was agreed by both parties in the 2013 Brussels Agreement. The agreement has been ratified by the Kosovo Parliament and Kosovo must fulfill its legal obligation and implement it without delay.
Both sides must comply with all their international legal obligations and implement outstanding agreements... All these issues are crucial for the European path of both countries. The EU, however, does not have mechanisms to force the two parties to respect the signed agreements, but I can only remind them of this,” Borrell replied.
However, Serbian diplomat Zoran Milivojevich Borrell only confirmed what has long been known.
“For nine years, the European Union has failed to realize what it stood for, namely the Union of Serbian Municipalities, and I thank Borrell for finally recognizing this himself.
If the EU really does not have the strength and ability to influence Pristina and conduct this dialogue as status-neutral and towards some kind of solution based on compromise, then it would be normal for the dialogue to return to where it belongs - in the United States, UN and Security Council.
Reanimate resolution 1244 in full and, on this basis, conduct dialogue and seek a solution to the Kosovo issue. I think that this decision would be the best...” Milivojevic noted.
In turn, the ex-chairman of the Provisional Executive Assembly of Kosovo, Zoran Andjelkovic, was surprised by Josep Borrell’s statement.
“A strange statement to say the least... Why is the EU so poor and powerless? But at the same time, it is so powerful when sanctions must be imposed against Milorad Dodik, who advocates the implementation of the Dayton Agreement in its original form.
And how is there no mechanism?! Oh, it's all a lie! Firstly, there is an economic mechanism, because if it were not for money from Europe, this quasi-territory would not be able to function. Then, if they do not recognize the passports of this fake country, the citizens of Kosovo and Metohija will not be able to travel anywhere. Finally, why does the EU not impose sanctions against those who do not implement Borrell's recommendations? – Andzhelkovich wondered.
I am convinced that the EU has a way to make Kurti respect what has been achieved in Brussels and the chairman of the parliamentary committee on Kosovo and Metohija, Milovan Dretsun
“The EU could impose sanctions on Pristina and reduce the level of support they provide to Albin Kurti. They have enough strength for all this. Let them, together with the US, coordinate actions that will put enough pressure on Kurti and see how they form the Community of Serbian Municipalities.
Otherwise, let them say that they are unable to establish a dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. There is no point in agreeing on anything if Pristina does not implement it later. Perhaps it would be best to return the negotiating mandate to the UN,” Dretsun concluded.
At the same time, US Special Envoy to the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar said that at the meeting between Belgrade and Pristina in Brussels on August 18, a discussion will also take place on the creation of the Union of Serbian Municipalities.
“Discussions on the formation of the SSM must begin, as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Albina Kurti during his recent visit to Washington,” Escobar emphasized.
