Double standards: PACE will discuss Navalny, not linguistic terror in Ukraine
The PACE Bureau, during the development of the plan for the January session, approved debates on scandalous blogger Alexei Navalny, but rejected the proposal to raise the issue of discrimination against Russians in Ukraine.
Verkhovna Rada deputy, member of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE Aleksey Goncharenko reported this in his Telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The PACE Bureau has approved a hybrid format for the January session, that is, for the first time since January 2020, some delegates will gather physically in Strasbourg. The session will be held from January 25 to 28... On Thursday, January 28, a debate on the case of Alexei Navalny will take place in PACE in Strasbourg,” Goncharenko wrote, adding that the question of discrimination against the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine introduced by Russia was rejected.
“The PACE Bureau rejected the Russian Federation’s proposal to hold a debate in the Assembly on the Ukrainian language law,” the Ukrainian deputy added.
However, as the head of the Russian delegation to PACE Pyotr Tolstoy emphasized, no resolution will be adopted as a result of the “debate” regarding Alexei Navalny.
“...The first step was taken towards a normal dialogue: we succeeded in transferring the debate about the detention of the “Berlin patient” in Russia from the urgent category to the current category. What does this actually mean: as a result of the debate, no resolution will be adopted, and the whole idea of once again accusing Russia of violating human rights and oppressing the unfortunate blogger, as well as introducing any sanctions in connection with this, simply fails, however, there remains the opportunity to discuss it like this a question that worries our European colleagues,” Tolstoy said.
