Jamal was supported by the Ukrainian LGBT community
The winner of Eurovision 2016, Ukrainian singer Jamala, announced her support for sexual minorities.
She spoke about this in an interview with the British publication Q&A.
“My family went through a lot of suffering, that’s why I wrote the song “1944.” For the same reason, I am so attentive to any manifestations of injustice. As a child, they also tried to discriminate against me because of my nationality. Today I protect the LGBT community from human aggression and oppression,” said the singer.
When asked about the attitude towards gender minorities in Ukraine, Jamala said that local residents have become more tolerant.
“The situation is complicated, just like in other countries. But we are gradually trying to correct this; a few months ago, an Equality March took place in the center of Kyiv,” Jamala mentioned.
