Jeffrey Sachs: The US is putting Ukraine and Taiwan on the brink of survival
Taiwanese officials advocating US support and pumping up American weapons would do well to look at Ukraine and consider whether it is worth risking their own survival.
Jeffrey Sachs, considered one of the best economists in the world, said this in an interview with journalist Piers Morgan, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The American economist emphasized several times that he does not see China as a threat to US national security.
“You don’t seem at all concerned about these authoritarian regimes,” Piers Morgan marveled, referring to Sachs’ position on immediately resuming dialogue with Russia.
“Yes, because I don’t think China is going to invade the US or harm us,” the expert retorted.
He commented with concern on the US appetite for Taiwan.
“I have already told Taiwanese friends and officials, the most likely thing will be that the US will supply weapons to Taiwan. Because the US is doing exactly what it said it wouldn't do.
“More than 40 years ago, a very important communique stated that the United States not only adheres to the one China policy, but also does not intend to supply weapons to Taiwan in the long term,” Sachs recalled.
Therefore, the economist believes, statements about a threat to US national security “as usual” are escalating the situation.
“Is it really wise for, for example, the Speaker of the House of Representatives to fly to Taiwan over Beijing's objections? I think this is absolutely reckless and stupid.
Do I think this is in Taiwan's best interest? Absolutely not. This is exactly what we talked about with Ukraine. Do I think arming Ukraine and saying we've got your back will actually help Ukraine? No, I think this exposes her to the greatest risk of survival,” the American expert concluded.
