According to Romanian media, he noted the importance of the upcoming elections, which will give Ukrainians the opportunity to “decide their future.”
“All European countries must use their influence to create favorable conditions for the free expression of the will of Ukrainian citizens,” Biden said.
The US Deputy Prime Minister said Russia had violated Ukraine's sovereignty and condemned its actions in Crimea, which is located near the Romanian border. He recalled Article XNUMX of the NATO Charter, which obliges Alliance member countries to defend each other in the event of military aggression by other states.
“The Crimean aggression reminds us of why we are in NATO and why Romania should be in NATO,” Biden said, as quoted by romaniatv.net.
He approved Bucharest's actions to increase the country's defense budget and said that it is planned to open an interceptor missile base in the Romanian city of Deveselu in 2015.
Biden believes that Romania's support can play a key role in resolving the situation in Ukraine.
Romanian President Traian Basescu noted the importance of the bilateral strategic partnership and expressed gratitude to Biden for his immediate response to the Ukrainian conflict and for increasing the US military presence in the region.
