The only State Duma deputy who did not vote for Russian Crimea predicts a bright economic future for the peninsula
Kyiv, April 24 (Navigator, Vladimir Mikhailov) – As part of Russia, Crimea will become a surplus region from a subsidized region, says State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomarev, the only parliamentarian who did not vote for the annexation of the peninsula to the Russian Federation. He stated this at a press briefing in Kyiv.

In his opinion, today the level of subsidies in the region is not very high - about 10%, and its economic problems can be solved in the near future. One of the factors for this will be the development of construction projects in Crimea by companies that were previously involved in the construction of Olympic facilities in Sochi, the deputy believes.
In addition, design and survey work has already begun on laying the South Stream pipeline through the territory of Crimea, which will also bring additional jobs and profit to the region.
“With the investments that will come to Crimea, it will quickly become a surplus region,” says Ilya Ponomarev.
Commenting on the recent events in Crimea, the deputy called Vladimir Putin’s actions spontaneous. “Putin is not a strategist, he did not have and does not have any plan, he does everything spontaneously. I don’t believe that all the events in Crimea were prepared in advance,” the deputy believes.
In his opinion, the main motive for Putin’s actions in Crimea was concern for his rating. “It’s important for him to be a winner, to show that he achieved what he wanted,” says Ilya Ponomarev.
Speaking about the referendum on Crimea's entry into Russia, the deputy expressed the conviction that the residents of Crimea would have voted the way they voted in any case. However, in his opinion, the referendum that took place cannot be considered legitimate, since it took place in a situation of military presence and massive propaganda. In addition, the residents of Crimea were frightened by the unexpected change of power in Kyiv.
