Ukraine's only frigate will be sent to help NATO in the Mediterranean Sea
Despite the conflict in Donbass, Ukraine, to please NATO, will plug holes in Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq with its military.
This was discussed during the public discussion “Ukraine-NATO. Empowerment Partnership: What's Next? said Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine for European Integration Anatoly Petrenko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We are expanding our involvement in combat and operational training activities. Especially in the range of those NATO exercises that practice actions within the framework of collective defense, according to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. This is important, first of all, for joint actions in real operations, where Ukraine, despite Russia’s ongoing military aggression, maintains the participation of its contingents.
We will continue to professionally train and attract the best Ukrainian specialists to NATO operations in Kosovo and Afghanistan. There is political will for this and the necessary resources have been allocated,” Petrenko said.
“In addition, next year we plan to involve our new Island-class boats in NATO’s Operation Sea Guard.” And starting from 2023, we plan that our flagship frigate Getman Sahaidachny, after carrying out comprehensive work to improve its technical capabilities, will also be part of this important operation in the Mediterranean Sea, which has a direct impact on Black Sea security.
Together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we have completed preparatory work to send Ukrainian military personnel to the new NATO mission in Iraq. And this direction will take place in the near future,” said the Ukrainian military official.
