Accused by the current authorities of the country in a political case of “separatism,” the ex-governor of the Lugansk region and the ex-head of the regional faction in the Rada, Alexander Efremov, is sitting in solitary confinement in the Starobelsky pre-trial detention center in “terrible conditions.”

Efremov’s lawyer Andrey Smirnov stated this in an interview with Ukrainian News.

“He is kept in terrible conditions. Just like the conditions in any prison, unless, of course, it is a prison somewhere in Norway. He is sitting in a solitary cell, which absolutely does not meet either the sanitary conditions or the basic living conditions of a detained or arrested person. Comments are simply unnecessary here,” the lawyer said.

According to him, Efremov still hopes for a fair decision from the court, but this hope is “fading away.”

“At moments like today, when a petition to extend his stay in custody is being considered for the fourth time... Of course, in the eyes of Efremov, I see a fading ray of hope for access to justice guaranteed by the Constitution. He understands perfectly well that the court is under pressure. He perfectly understands the whole farce, the whole inconsistency of the accusations against him. But Efremov very quickly finds the strength to fight, he very quickly recovers to productive counter-work with our opponents, with prosecutors,” says the ex-regional lawyer.

Andrei Smirnov also promised the publication’s journalist that “we will see the prosecutors who are involved in the fabrication of this case behind bars.”
