The effect of a compressed spring: The number of supporters of the Russian language has sharply increased in Ukraine
If previously the number of supporters of enshrining the norm on bilingualism in the Constitution of Ukraine was decreasing from year to year, then this year the reverse process is observed.
Ukrainian social psychologist Svetlana Chunikhina spoke about this on her Facebook page.
She said that the Institute of Social and Political Psychology has been conducting public opinion research in Ukraine since 2002, which showed that since 2004 there have been about 10 points more of those who categorically disagree with how the government influences the course of things (there were 37 %, became 48%).
At the same time, the expert clarifies, the number of those who are completely or mostly satisfied with their lives has increased by the same 10 points (from 25% to 37%).
“A Ukrainian citizen is a complex and nonlinear personality. But that’s a saying, but here’s a fairy tale. The number of supporters of enshrining bilingualism in the Constitution of Ukraine naturally decreased year after year and was halved (from 51 to 25) until February 2018. In February 2018, this idea was already favored by approximately 34% of fellow citizens.
Moreover, the most rapid growth of supporters of constitutional bilingualism is in the Southern region. Last year it was 44%, this year it was 65% (and this is the maximum during the period of observations on this issue). Pyotr Alekseevich missed with his army-of-faith,” sums up Chunikhina.
