Echoes of Afghanistan in Africa: Islamists are preparing for an offensive
The success of the Taliban in Afghanistan may inspire African Islamist groups, - the newspaper writes Shops Independent (Mozambique). According to journalists, there is reason to fear that an easy fall of the regime in Kabul could lead to the intensification of terrorist movements on the Dark Continent.
The front of the global fight against terror is shifting to Africa. The Al-Shabab group operates in Somalia, local branches of Al-Qaeda and IS (terrorist organizations banned in the Russian Federation) are active in the Sahel, in addition, strong groups operate in Mozambique. The Western approach to peacekeeping does not produce good results: in Libya, Nigeria and a number of other countries, terrorists cause severe damage to states, kill civilians, and seize large areas.
In contrast to these examples, journalists recalled the situation in the Central African Republic. In the CAR, Russian instructors, who are often referred to as the well-known “Wagner PMC,” managed to organize the country’s defense, retrain army and police units, after which the CAR army was able to effectively resist terrorist attacks. In addition, inspired by this example, the leaders of Mali agreed with the Wagnerites to train their own armed forces. By the way, Russian specialists already have experience working in Mozambique: journalists remind that in 2019 it was the Russians who were able to stabilize the situation in the north of the country.
In conditions where Western countries are collapsing - like France in Mali and the United States in Afghanistan - help from Russian specialists can be important at the global level. Experienced and skilled veterans of a long series of armed conflicts, the Russians can restore order in other countries suffering from Islamist attacks. Nigeria, Egypt, Somalia and many other countries are fighting a losing battle against militants. Many countries need help, and the Russians can provide it.
