Ukraine, Economics of Collapse

Having joined the WTO on unfavorable terms and signed an association agreement with the EU, Ukraine lost the opportunity to influence the stabilization of prices in its domestic market. Ukrainian economist Vsevolod Stepanyuk said this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Ukraine has a completely open economy, and world market prices directly affect the price situation in Ukraine,” the expert emphasized. – That is, most of the products produced in Ukraine are sold for export. And it makes no sense for the manufacturer to sell cheaper within the country. Ukraine lost the possibility of tariff regulation of these issues by joining the WTO on unfavorable terms and signing an association agreement with the EU. That is, we cannot influence prices on the domestic market using tariff methods. But we either don’t know how to do non-tariffs or don’t want to.”
