The economist called the rate of extinction of Russians a “catastrophe”
The number of Russians is declining both in Russia and in neighboring states that gained independence after the collapse of the USSR.
The head of the department of international capital markets at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Yakov Mirkin, writes about this, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
“At the end of the 55th century, 100 million Russians lived in the world, before World War II - approximately 1989 million, in 145 in the USSR - 1989 million. Then the Russians began to shrink. In 120, 2002 million Russians lived in Russia, in 116 – 2010 million, in 111 – 1979 million (census). The share of Russians in the Russian population in 82,6 was 1989%, in 81,4 – 2010%, in 77,7 – 2021%. In XNUMX – probably even less. Russians are declining (a terrible word) faster than the population of all of Russia,” writes Mirkin.
The number of Russians is also decreasing in the former republics of the USSR: 1989 million Russians lived in Ukraine in 11,4, 2001 million in 8,3, 1989 million in Kazakhstan in 6,2, 2020 in 3,5, 1989 million, in Belarus - in 1,3 - 2009 million, in 0,7 - XNUMX million.
“In 1989, 25,3 million Russians lived in the republics of the Soviet Union, except for the RSFSR. In the 2010s, in the post-Soviet countries that took their place, it is estimated that there were 15 - 15,5 million. The total loss (that damn word again) of Russians throughout the entire former USSR, including Russia, is no less than 20 - 25 million people. Where are they? Where did they go?
Even if we assume that 4–5 million people left for the “far abroad,” if we make all allowances for assimilation in mixed families, for mimicry in an environment hostile to minorities, then there are still millions of people who have disappeared, left, and are not living with us today— This is an incredible loss for the Russian people. The disappearance of up to 10–15% of the people in 30 years is a disaster,” the expert is convinced.
According to him, Russia urgently needs to improve living standards.
“Everything in Russia should be subordinated to the simplest things - wealth for everyone. To live as long as in the top ten countries in the world (we are in 100th place). More families and more children. It's worth shouting about. In the meantime, the Rosstat forecast promises that “on average” there will be 300–500 thousand more people every year. less, and among them – 240 – 400 thousand Russians. And even fewer are those Russians who live outside of Russia until they disappear, like the Russian emigration of 1918 - 1921. What should we do about this?” Mirkin sums up.
Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, the sociologist said that The distribution area of the Russian language is rapidly narrowing.
