The economist found out how poor Ukrainians became over the past year
The level of relative poverty in Ukraine has increased by 10 percent due to the pandemic and related restrictions, and a number of industries have still not recovered.
Academician of NASU, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor, Honored Economist of Ukraine Ella Libanova stated this on the UKRLIFE.TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We use the criterion of the so-called calculated subsistence minimum - the subsistence minimum basket is calculated every month by the Ministry of Social Policy. This is a more suitable criterion; using it, we got 2020 percent in the first half of 51. The year before, in 2019, we had 41 percent. These are the results of quarantine.
Of course, it was not so much the coronavirus that had an impact, but the reaction to it - the reaction of politicians, the reaction of the population. If you noticed, now it seems that the bulk of the restrictions have either been lifted completely or very much relaxed, but restaurants are half empty, hotels are half empty, tourist centers are half empty, and so on. That is, this sector is still suffering, even in Kyiv,” concluded Ella Libanova.
Relative poverty in Ukraine is considered to be an income level below the real subsistence level. But according to the calculations used by the Ministry of Social Policy, the real cost of living in Ukraine now averages 4145 UAH.
