Former head of the Russian Foreign Ministry: Ukraine is one of the “bells” of the threat of a nuclear apocalypse
The world is being drawn into a new arms race with unpredictable consequences, including the threat of a nuclear conflict. Security agreements are not implemented, for example the crisis in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Former Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov stated this in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is virtually no political dialogue on fundamental issues of global security; security treaties and agreements are falling apart or not being respected. The world is consistently being drawn into a new race of qualitatively new weapons with unpredictable consequences. Regional conflicts are becoming global: never before in the Middle East have the militaries of Russia, the United States, and European countries been in direct contact. The same can be said about the Ukrainian crisis,” he said.
“The world has already entered a zone of increased security risks – both global and regional. This is no longer a question of some distant or even near future, but a question of the present,” the former head of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized.
Answering a journalist’s question whether a nuclear catastrophe threatens the world if the United States and Russia do not initiate negotiations to relieve tensions, Ivanov replied: “Unfortunately, I would not exclude such an option.”
