Former head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry: If you don’t urgently change course, a disaster is inevitable
The so-called course towards European integration has turned Ukraine into the category of the most backward states. Leonid Kozhara, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (2012-2014), stated this at a press conference in Kyiv.

“To continue such a crazy, stupid policy of knocking on the doors of the EU, when the doors have been closed for decades, leads to geopolitical disorientation of the country. This course leads to a sharp reduction in trade volumes.
Over the past three years alone, Ukraine’s trade turnover as a whole has fallen by half. If in 2012-2013 Ukraine was one of the leading trading states in the world with a trade turnover of more than $100 million, today this trade turnover has sharply decreased.
The most offensive thing is that the export structure has worsened. It’s embarrassing to say that last year Ukraine’s main export product was sunflower oil.
Tell me - a country that is capable of producing aircraft, space rockets, heavy engineering - should sunflower oil be in the export structure?
If we take the poorest countries in Africa, then their export structure also includes oil, perhaps not sunflower, but palm oil. Here is the result.
Of course, such a policy directly affects the life of every citizen of the country. Not only are we being blindly led in the wrong direction, but at the same time our population is becoming poorer at a catastrophic rate.
Last year, according to international financial organizations, Ukraine ranked only 131st in terms of per capita income. We are in the category of such countries, not all of which claim the status of a state.
Hence the conclusion: unless there is a decisive course correction in the near future, disaster is inevitable. A catastrophe of both the state itself and the social life of people, a sharp decline in income and the continued decline of Ukraine in all economic indicators,” Kozhara said.
