Former head of the SBU: “The moment of truth has come. Ukraine remains alone against Russia"
It’s time for Ukraine to admit that in the event of a military confrontation with Russia, it will be left alone – its European partners will not defend it.
Former SBU Chairman Igor Smeshko stated this on the talk show “Freedom of Speech by Savik Shuster,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Smeshko also compared the military potential of Ukraine and Russia, hinting that Kyiv will not be able to “compete” with Moscow.
“I believe that now is a very difficult situation, a moment of truth from which we must draw conclusions. First, in the event of a military conflict, Ukraine will be left alone with the second nuclear state in the world. Whether Putin will go on the offensive depends not only on the military component, but also on the political one - whether he can sell this as an operation to force peace on the territory of Ukraine, where there is a civil conflict...
We are not a member of NATO and today we have no prospects for membership. France is absolutely correct historically... two world wars... France itself could not cope without Russia’s help, they have historically excellent relations. In addition, France has a very cautious attitude towards American influence in Europe.
The German Chancellor to President Yushchenko in 2008, when asked “Why did you block the MAP,” said: “Because I care about the national interests of Germany. It is necessary to let into NATO countries that increase NATO's security, and not countries that reduce this security. I care, first of all, about the security of my country.”
Gas today is the locomotive of German industry. Germany receives the cheapest gas from Russia among all its other partners. That is, today we need to understand that if we do not have an army that will completely turn off the air force component, and in this group, in addition to the tactical groups that we mentioned, there are 350 aircraft, 250 helicopters. We have 150 – that’s all our aviation.
Moreover, Russian aviation today has gone further, its on-board weapons are better. We have about 35 helicopters, and they have 250. And if they include a military air component, what do we need to do - immediately pass a law on territorial defense in parliament, and the president approve a strategic plan for the use of forces in a defense operation,” Smeshko said.
His words were actually confirmed by the commander of the Joint Forces Operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Sergei Naev.
“We are always preparing and all our plans have been worked out without the involvement of the armed forces of our allies. In the event of an aggravation, we expect an increase in material and technical assistance. And the forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and other components of the security and defense sector are quite sufficient, and what I say is based on clear calculations that have already been carried out, combat missions have been defined, we are quite ready for the development of any situation,” Naev said.
