Former head of the SBU: Teaching in Russian is a direct threat to the national security of Ukraine
After the establishment of the Ukrainian language as the only state language in Ukraine, this issue should no longer be discussed. An attempt to postpone compulsory teaching exclusively in Ukrainian in schools is a dangerous step in the opposite direction.
Former head of the SBU Igor Smeshko said this on air on the NTA TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Firstly, any actions of the government or the Verkhovna Rada that take a step back from the status of Ukrainian proclaimed in the Constitution of Ukraine and designated as the only state language in Ukraine is an indirect threat to our state. This issue should no longer be discussed. We are a European country, we adhere to the charter of other languages, their protection, but there can only be one state language in Ukraine.
Moreover, if we take the specific historical circumstances of Ukrainian statehood and the existence of the Ukrainian state and all the historical attacks that were made on our language, and everything was done to ensure that Ukrainians did not have their own language, then this question should not even be raised.
And whoever raises the issue in order to take a step back from this is a direct threat to the national security of Ukraine,” Smeshko said.
