Former head of the SBU: Ukrainians want victory, but peace is a “fifth column”
Russia will try to bring into the new Verkhovna Rada following the autumn elections the political forces it needs, those who agree to “peace at any cost” and can stop Ukraine’s European integration.
Former head of the SBU Igor Smeshko stated this on air on the ICTV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There will be an attempt, a very serious one, on the part of the Kremlin’s political leadership to bring into parliament a critical mass of pro-Russian political forces that will change the Constitution.
You have heard speeches by the so-called opposition forces, which de facto call for the creation of a situation in which one region can stop any further movement of Ukraine to return to European civilization, the European vector, the EU and NATO.
We have not seen those people brought to justice who almost openly profess peace on any terms.
Opinion polls say that Ukrainians want peace, but not at any cost. They want victory. And we have forces that include the media, parties in parliament, and almost unlimited resources,” Smeshko said.
The penetration of the “fifth column” into power is facilitated by corruption, the SBU officer laments.
“The executive branch of government, power and money are a great temptation. They say slogans, and when they come to power, after that they have only one thing - how to stay in power. They can't do anything against the fifth column. The executive branch of government controls all law enforcement agencies,” Smeshko said.
