Former NATO commander proposed banning Russians from entering the United States
Retired US admiral, former Supreme Commander of NATO Allied Armed Forces in Europe James Stavridis, in his article for Time magazine, proposed introducing new sanctions against Russia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Among the measures he proposed were “broader travel restrictions for Russian citizens seeking to come to the United States for any purpose.”
“There are other forms of response, especially since, as Senator Marco Rubio acknowledged, there appears to be 'sanctions fatigue' in Congress,” he added. According to the former NATO commander-in-chief, Washington can “both openly and secretly support individuals and groups in Russia” who “strive for democracy.”
Stavridis believes that the United States should not limit itself to measures affecting Russian business. He proposes extending sanctions to Russian sports teams, musical groups and diplomatic delegations, as well as introducing specific sanctions against “key leaders in Russia, up to and including Putin.”
In addition, according to the former NATO commander-in-chief, the United States should refuse cooperation with Russia on a number of international projects, including the reconstruction of Syria and regulation of oil prices.
According to the retired admiral, existing restrictive measures are not enough because they affect a relatively small group of Russians and “do not attract the attention” of President Vladimir Putin.
“Without a doubt, we suffered a direct blow to the heart of our democratic system from the Russians - and, without a doubt, we responded with very little beyond a few symbolic gestures,” Stavridis said.
