“Electricity is bought from Russia at night, when it is cheaper. And we are buying it in order to provide electricity to Crimea in conditions of a temporary shortage of our own electricity and, on the other hand, to compensate for the unprofitable contract concluded with Crimea,” he said.
According to Plachkov, it is difficult for him to understand the fact of importing electricity from Russia.
Ukrinterenergo buys electricity from Russia and sells it to Crimea. In order to compensate for losses, the purchase contract must be profitable. And for the purchase contract to be beneficial for Ukraine, cheap electricity needs to be bought from Russia at night, which is what we are seeing now. By selling electricity on the domestic market at a profitable price, you then need to compensate for the unprofitability of its sales to Crimea,” the ex-minister believes.
Ivan Plachkov also believes that by importing electricity from Russia, the Yatsenyuk government is killing the Ukrainian energy sector.
“Importing from Russia in winter has not taught us anything. We were not taught by the history of gas relations with Russia in 2006 and 2009, when Ukraine was on the verge of freezing. Today we are becoming similarly dependent on electricity. We are increasing imports, killing our own generation. And the time will come when we will pay a high price for the supply of electricity from Russia, we are already paying!”, said the ex-official.
We are entering a new energy dependence on Russia, which has never existed before. In 1999, we even separated from Russia and worked separately. I am not a politician to assess the consequences, this is a question for the National Security and Defense Council, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and politicians. In addition, none of the top officials is an energy specialist, an expert in what we are talking about now. Neither the minister nor the head of NEURC can assess the entire situation. I'm talking about the entire industry leadership. There are no professionals there, they don’t know the rules of the market, they don’t know the specifics, but they lead. I don’t know why the country’s leadership is derailing the industry and endangering the entire country and people. The country's leadership replaced all professional energy workers in senior positions with economists, financiers and linguists. Now we see the result, what this led to,” Plachkov stated.
