The situation in the east is not developing in favor of the Ukrainian military. The reason that the Ukrainians in Donbass did not win more than one major victory is that peacetime corrupts military structures and Ukraine was not ready for war.

This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Ukrainian newspaper “Den”" ex-Minister of Defense of Ukraine Yevgeny Marchuk.

“We weren't ready. Peacetime often corrupts military structures. This is not my discovery. That is why I was an active supporter of Ukraine participating in the stabilization forces in Iraq and in UN peacekeeping missions in general. Training grounds, exercises - all this is good. But if people know that there is no real danger of dying, they sometimes lose their form. That’s why we have either Ilovaisk or Debaltsevo.” – states Marchuk.
