“What we call battalion commanders... I want to choose my words very delicately... Those people who came from civilian life and who called themselves battalion commanders, in fact, in military terms cannot be battalion commanders. A battalion officer prepares for at least 10 years in order to understand all the connections between the branches of the military, in order to know how to organize life in order to get victories, not defeats...
If the state leadership chooses a different policy, then the one who takes the initiative - we see what is happening now regarding the volunteer battalions... A serious campaign has been launched against them. I think it will be the subject of historical research as to why so many of them died.
I think that one of the conclusions will be that the authorities were afraid of these volunteer battalions and threw them to the front line, where regular units should be. Calling the volunteer battalions “assault battalions,” they threw them ahead of the unprepared, and they died.
They were not provided with the necessary weapons; they were given weapons of the 43-45 model. Under such conditions, it is impossible to amateurishly organize the country’s defense,” Gritsenko said.
