Former US Ambassador encourages Ukrainians: We will make Russia miserable as soon as Putin leaves
After the departure of Vladimir Putin, a split is expected in the Russian elite. This was stated by former US Ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul in Kyiv at the Yalta European Strategy conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“To say that they are united is incorrect. When the “post-Putin” era begins, don’t think that everyone in the elite will behave the same way. I think we can expect a big fight over property. Also, some of these people who didn't like the trajectory will start asking the question: Are we on the right course? ... I think there will be a split in the elite,” the American said.
McFaul added that the attempt to transfer power to other security officials will not find support among all representatives of the Russian elite.
“Russians will not marry Bortnikov or Patrushev. There were 20 years of “Putinism”, and now they will promise another 20 years of the same direction, but without the charisma and character that Putin had. I think the transfer of power to the security forces will be very difficult,” he outlined a scenario favorable for the United States.
