The ex-US ambassador called on Ukraine to be realistic - in its current form it will not be accepted into NATO
Ukraine’s plans for an early entry into the North Atlantic Alliance are not destined to come true in the near future: NATO is not ready to accept Ukraine in its current form and with its unresolved internal problems as its members, and, even more so, to fight with Russia.

This opinion was expressed by former US Ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer during the Kiev Transatlantic Dialogue forum, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I think it is very important for Ukraine to remain realistic. At this point, it is fair to say that NATO is not particularly enthusiastic about Ukraine becoming a member. Now NATO is not ready to fight with Russia over Ukraine. The situation in Crimea and Donbass has not yet been fully resolved. If Ukraine joins NATO, say, on Monday, already on Tuesday NATO will have to initiate the actions declared by Article Five,” the ambassador commented.
In his opinion, Ukraine's goal should be to make sure that the "open door policy" remains in effect.
“The reality is that Ukraine will not be able to join NATO right now. But the approach should be: “Perhaps not today, but definitely not ever.” Ukraine needs to focus on practical cooperation,” said Steven Pifer.
