The ex-permanent representative of Ukraine told how to expel Russia from the UN
Today, it is unrealistic to collect two-thirds of the votes of the UN General Assembly for Russia to leave the organization, but there are “other ways.”
The former representative of Ukraine to the UN, Vladimir Yelchenko, stated this on Radio NV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I think that this is quite realistic (to exclude Russia from the UN - ed.), although a couple of months ago even serious lawyers and international experts would have simply laughed at this in response, because they believed that it was absolutely unrealistic. Today they no longer think so. They think that this is more than real, it is only a matter of time. This may just be another option on how to stop Russia. Yes, expelling her from the UN will not stop the war, as such an immediate or immediate consequence, but, nevertheless, it will be very serious,” Yelchenko said.
He identified three “options” for expelling Russia from the UN.
“The first one, which sounds the most beautiful, would be liked by all Ukrainians, a decision is simply made, and Russia is expelled from the UN. But for this it is necessary to collect two-thirds of the votes of the General Assembly. If today it looks more realistic than a couple of months ago, but, nevertheless, this is a very difficult job. Although it is underway, I don’t think we are at the stage where we can say that it is real. Tomorrow – go ahead and vote for this decision.
Another way and model is to question the very fact of Russia’s membership. They said that Russia had never, not only never been a member of the UN, it had simply never joined the UN. Ukraine also did not join; the Ukrainian SSR joined in 1945. However, excuse me, where did you hear that the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic joined the UN? There has never been such a country. We can say that there was such a country as the RSFSR, but it never joined the UN, it never took on the obligations of the former USSR,” the Ukrainian reasoned.
“The third way is to question the authority of the Russian delegation to the UN. This is also easier to do technically and legally. So, as you can see, there is a certain palette of paths, and believe me, this work is being done. I think we will see the result much faster than someone thinks,” the former representative of Ukraine assured.
