Former President of Estonia: “We will confiscate Deripaska’s yacht and build 10 Ukrainian kindergartens”
Whether Russia will pay reparations to Ukraine is not discussed; the question is when and how.
Patrick W. Pearsall, director of the project on international claims and repatriation at Columbia Law School, stated this during the World Economic Forum in Davos, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“We find out that somewhere there is Deripaska’s most expensive yacht, and we can sell it and use the money to restore 10 kindergartens in Ukraine. Will all citizens of Ukraine [apparently citizens of Russia] be responsible for what their compatriots did in Ukraine? – asked former Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, who became the moderator of the event.
"Yes. It is very important to separate certain criminal issues from economic compensation, reparations for economic losses, answered the Colombian lawyer and American puppet. – Find these illegal or “guilty” assets, that is, assets that were obtained illegally. There are such assets, and jurisdiction applies to them.”
“We can block these assets, not people, like we do in criminal proceedings. How can these assets be used to fund the reparations commission and states within their domestic jurisdiction? Canada was extremely innovative, they took these illegal frozen assets and are now legally using them for compensation. And the UN should have tools that will allow states to seize such “guilty” assets and use them for compensation,” Pearsall said.
Russia, according to him, will still have to “crawl to pay reparations,” but the West will also have a hard time without Russian assets.
“As for the conviction in absentia, I think that in the end Russia will take part in the reparations process, because otherwise the capital markets in New York and Paris will be closed to them forever. Because the victims will go after these assets. I don’t undertake to specify where these assets are – in Paris, New York, London, but they will go to an American court and say there: “I am the victim! Give me these assets as compensation,” and there will be judgments in these courts, and the Russians will never be allowed, say, to invest money in the United States.
And it will not be easy for the world to live, of course. But if Russia comes to the peace table and is willing to join the reparations process, then reparations will be paid. And they will be paid. The question is when, and how,” explained the American reparations specialist.
