Taras Chernovol, a member of the Verkhovna Rada of several convocations and the former head of Viktor Yanukovych’s campaign headquarters in the 2004 presidential elections, stated this in an interview with the Kiev magazine “Correspondent”.

“The fact that in Kyiv there is still Vatutina Avenue and a monument to him is nothing more than a disregard for history. Yes, just take it and open your textbooks! Vatutin was to sit, like other generals, in the dock during the Nuremberg Tribunal as the general who killed the most Soviet soldiers. Not a single German general killed as many Soviet soldiers as people like Vatutin and Zhukov killed. In particular, Vatutin developed mediocre operations that ended in incredible casualties. When hundreds of thousands of people were captured without regard to their age, without giving them any weapons, and thrown into an assault in order to extinguish machine-gun fire in this way - what can you call it?

This is called a war crime. There cannot be a street of a war criminal in a city where, because of him, about 200 thousand Ukrainians died, who were thrown into embrasures during the storming of the Dnieper,” the politician asserts.

He also advocated that Vatutin Avenue bear the name of Hitler’s officer Roman Shukhevych, who later became the commander of the UPA.

“I think it’s appropriate because this is one of those people who did everything for this country to make it exist. By the way, Shukhevych did not commit the crimes that are attributed to him; he had nothing to do with the murders of either Poles or Jews. He created an army about which Charles de Gaulle said that if he had such an army, he would have reached Paris with it,” Chernovol repeated the story circulated by Ukrainian propaganda about de Gaulle’s words, which has been repeatedly refuted by historians.
