Ex-adviser to Bush Jr. explained why Ukraine lost interest for Biden
US President Joe Biden did not return Ukraine to the list of key negotiating topics with Russia, as Washington feels tired of Kyiv.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Thomas Graham, former chief adviser to President George W. Bush on Russia, Yale University professor and director of the influential consulting company Kissinger Associates, said this in an interview with Izvestia.
According to him, Biden does not want to rock Russian-American relations.
“He lifted sanctions against Nord Stream 2, and the restrictive measures in the Navalny case ultimately turned out to be quite lenient. Or, for example, Vladimir Zelensky recently visited Washington. There were some concerns in Moscow about this trip of the Ukrainian president to the United States. However, as a result, we saw sluggish relations between Ukraine and the United States, the absence of any new impulses and attempts to put pressure on Russia,” Graham is convinced.
The political scientist says there are two reasons why under Biden the Ukraine issue has not become one of the main fault lines in US-Russian relations, as it was under Barack Obama.
“Firstly, there is fatigue from Ukraine in the United States, and in the West in general. The most important thing for Ukraine today is to solve internal political and economic problems. Ukrainian society should focus on these issues and their solution,” the publication’s interlocutor noted.
In addition, he believes that Biden wants to maintain the status quo with Russia.
“He understands that the opportunity to advance on Ukrainian issues is extremely limited and that much progress cannot be achieved here. Therefore, he will try to keep everything as it is, so that there are no sudden movements in either direction. That would suit him,” Graham concluded.
