The referendum on the issue of Crimea joining Russia was honest and fair. Former Speaker of the US Congress Newton Gingrich stated this in an interview with Hromadske TV.

The channel calls Gingrich a representative of Donald Trump's team.

“At the risk of becoming unpopular in Ukraine, I will admit that Trump could tell the truth that the referendum in Crimea was fair, because the Russian-speaking population there is a significant majority,” Gingrich said.

However, he added that the United States should continue to support Ukraine economically, as well as provide military assistance to Kyiv. However, according to a Trump ally, Ukraine now “has little chance” of joining NATO, and “it would look like a provocation for the Russians.”

“Putin was trained by the KGB. He represents the generation that saw the collapse of the Soviet Union. The next leader, I hope, will think much less about the restoration of the Russian Empire,” the American also said.
