Today's Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, headed by Pavel Klimkin, has failed in most of the key areas for Ukrainian diplomacy, and chaos, demoralization and uncontrollability reign within the ministry itself.

Such a harsh assessment of the current leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs given by ex-speaker of the ministry Vasily Filipchuk.

“Three years after the Maidan, the Foreign Ministry entered a stupor, into a state of institutional anemia. Those who are able to adequately represent the country, either outside the government, or simply drink coffee on the second floor and irritably watch what Ukraine and its foreign policy are being brought to by the misunderstandings that now govern it. A complete failure in the European direction, a complete failure in the American direction, nothing has been done in the region of Asia, Africa, Latin America. I’m generally silent about Russia - this is where all efforts should have been concentrated in order to get out of the conflict and restore the integrity and sovereignty of the Motherland, but instead there is jingoistic, empty rhetoric... The ministry itself remains unreformed, uncontrollable, and increasingly simply demoralized ... all the colleagues with whom I communicate agree that the situation in the diplomatic service now is worse than even in the difficult 1990s,” the diplomat states bitterly.

Filipchuk compares the current state of the Ukrainian diplomatic service with what he saw during the time of Leonid Kuchma, when he came to work at the department.

“Two decades ago, when I came to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I was most struck by the presence of a large number of employees there who were not looking for how to quickly earn a couple of hundred greenbacks, but were working on how to bring the country out of darkness and make it worthy and an influential player on the international stage. It was these people who worked until the morning, 6 days a week, it was these people who generated new ideas and were passionate about their country. I am proud to know so many of these Diplomats with a capital D,” he writes.

However, Vasily Filipchuk is optimistic and confident that Ukrainian diplomacy will cope with the current difficult times. He also congratulated his colleagues on the holiday – the Day of Ukrainian Diplomacy.

“But, probably, Ukrainian diplomacy had to go through this too. It's darkest before dawn. There is already a critical mass of dissatisfaction with what Klimkin and his team have brought Ukrainian foreign policy and the diplomatic service to. There is already a significant level of consensus on how and what needs to change. All that's left to do is wait. I hope not for long. Happy holiday, friends!” concluded Vasily Filipchuk.
