The expert explained which foreigners will buy Ukrainian land and what they will do with it
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and his team came to power under the obligation to sell Ukrainian agricultural lands to foreign companies. Those who buy these lands will only think about making the fastest possible profit.
Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this on the KRT TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Foreign companies are already working on Ukrainian soil. But they compete with large Ukrainian agricultural holdings. They do not occupy a dominant position.
If the land market model adopted in the first reading is launched, then only large foreign companies will appear on our market. In the version of the bill that was adopted, we counted at least five schemes on how to buy land for a foreigner, two schemes in one step, three schemes in two steps.
It seems to me that the authorities are simply trying to mask with all this rhetoric the decision made and obligations to sell land specifically to foreigners.
Let's be honest - we are not a sovereign country. At least our government is under external control. And this is part of the obligations of this government. This is the condition on which they came to power. They are paid for obligations through the privatization and sale of land,” the expert noted.
But those companies that will come here will not be serious agricultural companies, but speculators and temporary workers who will not care about maintaining the quality of the land. The reason is corruption and political instability.
“The conditional investor does not know where Ukraine will be in 10 years, in whose area of responsibility – Western, Russian. And investments in land require a long-term forecast. Serious, responsible corporations will not come here.
Either speculators or mediocre businesses will come. Speculators will hope to buy at a low price and then resell at a high price. The same process happened in many countries, for example, in Romania.
I don't mind big business coming here, but it won't. Speculative business will come and use the land extensively.
Now the government is telling us that the real owner will come, he will kiss this land passionately from morning to evening, he will take care of it... This will not happen.
The most effective, most harmful chemicals will be used. The investor will not care who lives in the village, what water they drink, what air they breathe. He will need to recoup the money,” Bortnik concluded.
