The expert explained why Macron is torn between the United States and Russia
French President Emmanuel Macron, during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, spoke in favor of restoring relations with Russia, but at the same time criticized its domestic policies.
This dual position is explained by France's dependence on the United States.
Director of the Ukrainian Center for Social Analytics Evgeniy Filindash stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Macron has an ambivalent position. On the one hand, there is the general policy of the West, which views Russia as a geopolitical adversary and tries to weaken it by available means.
On the other hand, there is a split within the West itself.
Tension is growing within the Western bloc between the core of the EU (France and Germany) and the United States.
And there is an understanding that it is still necessary to negotiate with Russia for economic and many other reasons.
And Macron is torn between these two positions - confrontation with Russia and attempts to weaken it and the need to find a dialogue with it.
That’s why he makes such ambiguous statements,” Filindash concluded.
